The local shop provides everything you require for your daily needs, fresh rolls, coffee etc. and is just a few minutes’ walk away. Naturally, however, the old town centre of Stade has much more extensive shopping facilities and restaurants offering local and international specialities that cater to every taste.

he town also has a lively cultural scene. The Stadeum hosts performances by international artists and has witnessed many unforgettable evenings. The Kunstverein Stade art society regularly exhibits works by national and international artists, e.g. in Galerie Gerd Uhlig. Further art exhibitions take place at the Kunsthaus Stade, Galerie Fuendling or the stately home Schloss Agathenburg in the neighbouring town of the same name. Two local history museums, the Museum Schwedenspeicher and the open-air Freilichtmuseum, the latter is situated in the middle of a small island in the castle moat, tell the fascinating story of Stade and the Altes Land.

The Altes Land region begins immediately behind Stade in the direction of the River Elbe. It extends almost to Hamburg and is known around the world as the largest contiguous fruit growing area in Europe. The landscape of the Altes Land is particularly picturesque during the weeks of spring when the cherry and apple trees are heavy with blossom. More information:

The metropolis of Hamburg with all its cultural and culinary attractions lies on the other side of the Elbe. It is easy to reach using the direct local railway (S-Bahn) connection from Stade, by car through the Elbtunnel or by boat using one of the ferries across the Elbe from Finkenwerder. The Linie 62 ferries are a real insider tip as they can be used with the normal day ticket sold by the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund for local public transport services. Enjoy an evening out, e.g. at the musicals The Lion King or Tarzan. Hamburg’s nightlife is famous around the world and has entertainment to suit every taste. From the Reeperbahn and St. Pauli to Blankenese and Hafencity – you are certain to feel very much at home.

The River Elbe is just a few minutes’ drive away from Stade. This waterway is the life blood of Hamburg providing a passageway for many ships between the city and the North Sea. Ship spotters can often be seen on the Elbe dyke watching luxury liners such as the Queen Mary II arriving or departing. Water sports are also popular on the Elbe, which has several marinas. Further downstream is the port of Cuxhaven – the starting point for the ferry service to Helgoland. The town also has beautiful white sandy beaches, which are perfect for relaxing and gathering your strength for the coming week. More informations:
